Musician

Phillip Golub

Phillip Golub (b. 1993) is a pianist, improviser, and composer based in Brooklyn, NY. Originally from Los Angeles, he creates highly original and expressive music, grounded in but not constrained by his engaged practice in jazz, creative music, and new music. Technically audacious, Phillip sublates sound worlds as distant as Thelonious Monk and Alexander Scriabin, the ars subtilior and Cecil Taylor, negating conventions, yet building on traditions.

Phillip’s recordings have been praised as “cutting edge” (Sequence 21) and containing “a profound concept […] triumphant […] fascinating” (Pop Matters)

Phillip Golub: Partisan Ship

Read "Partisan Ship" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

In a lot off ways, it is a game of catch-up listening to Brooklyn pianist/improvisor/composer Phillip Golub once he kick-starts the oddly titled Partisan Ship into high gear with “Loyalty Oath," a piece of mad musical fiction that holds attention in place with its octopi rhythms and runaway melodies rushing in all at once.

Read "Wayne's Sessions for Miles and Lee at Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa" reviewed by Marek J. Śmietański

Once upon a time, Miles Davis asked Wayne Shorter to compose music for an orchestral album. Yet neither those legendary sessions with Miles nor the similarly planned recordings with Lee Morgan ever came to life. The extraordinary scores remained hidden for decades--a silent treasure stacked in Wayne's home-- until they were rediscovered by Phillip Golub, assistant musical director of ...

John Hadfield: An Open Concept

Read "John Hadfield: An Open Concept" reviewed by Katchie Cartwright

John Hadfield's sound is instantly recognizable, due in part to his unique drum kit, which reflects the musics he has studied and with which he continues to engage. Hadfield's formal degrees are in jazz (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) and Western classical music (University of Missouri, Kansas City), but he also studied frame drumming and world ...
