Dan Neville

Dan Neville is a vibraphonist, composer, performer, and jazz big band arranger.

About Me

Dan Neville is a vibraphonist, composer, arranger, and educator whose work bridges jazz, Latin jazz, and the folkloric traditions of Colombia’s Pacific Coast. His music draws inspiration from patterns in nature, blending intricate harmonies, polyrhythms, and improvisation to create a sound both rooted in tradition and forward-looking in scope. Neville has performed throughout Europe and Latin America, appearing at major festivals and on NBC’s Today Show. He is a recipient of multiple honors, including first place in the jazz category of the 2025 Springfest International Vibraphone Competition. His production and arranging work on Xiomara Torres’ La Voz del Mar (Patois Records) held the #1 spot on RMR’s Latin Jazz charts for 14 weeks. A graduate of the California Jazz Conservatory and William Paterson University, Neville studied with masters including Dann Zinn, John Santos, Pete McGuinness, and Bill Charlap. His current projects include his ensemble Corazón de Chonta (fusing Colombian Pacific Coast music with jazz), the Dan Neville Nonet, and the Dan Neville Big Band. At the heart of Neville’s work is a belief that music can illuminate the deep connections between culture, nature, and human experience. ”Dan Neville is a dynamic and innovative vibraphonist, recognized for his expressive sound, advanced technique, and ability to unite musical traditions through a forward-looking artistic approach. With his nonet, he now offers a preview of one of the most exciting ensembles on the New York scene, building a bridge between jazz and an Afro-Colombian tradition that deserves to be far more widely known.” - Solar Latin Club 2026

My Jazz Story

I was first exposed to jazz when I discovered that one of Jimi Hendrix's influences was Wes Montgomery. I played guitar growing up and idolized Hendrix, so I knew that anyone he looked up to must be good. I was 16 at the time. I went to Tower Records and purchased a CD by Wes, and I was hooked from the very first ten seconds. The sound of the song "Lolita" illuminated my bedroom, as I just sat back amazed at how colorful and soulful this music was—I understood it, even though at the time I didn't understand how to go about playing it. I get chills listening to Wes' solo on "Lolita", and I can still listen to that song ten times in a row and never get tired of it. There is a truly timeless quality to genuinely spontaneous jazz music, and it is that quality that has inspired me to devote my life to studying and playing this music.
