Lennie's Work
Duration: 06:05
On "Lennie’s Work," Martin Nodeland’s group delivers a blend of jagged bebop lines, intense rhythmic syncopation, and modern chord progressions, incorporating Giant Steps-like modulations with more unusual key changes. Nodeland is a Norwegian guitarist, reminiscent of John Scofield meets Kurt Rosenwinkel. He has the instrumental and compositional chops to merit his own acclaim, however. The guitarist is supported here by Will Vinson on saxophone, Raymond Lavik on drums, Alexander Hoholm on bass and Martin Sandvik Gjerde on piano, who together generate plenty of propulsion. When you consider the album title Tributaries with the song name, "Lennie’s Work," it becomes clear that the band has put in the effort to learn from past masters while crafting something fresh.
