Butcher Brown

Marcus Tenney, Morgan Burrs, Corey Fonville, Andrew Randazzo, and DJ Harrison. Straight out of the underground, a steady rumble is building and it’s called Butcher Brown. Pulsing from the nerve center of Jellowstone Studios in Richmond VA, Butcher Brown takes careful note of the history and legacy of jazz and throws caution to the wind with wanton abandon. Garage punk jazz funk on the low end of the dial gives way to delicate and elegant compositions as the band shows off without trying. These are not just players, these are musicians.

Brilliant Corners 2026

Brilliant Corners 2026Black Box/Various VenuesBelfast, N. IrelandFebruary 27-March 7, 2026 Few events signpost the time of year quite like a city's flagship contemporary music festival. For one week every March, as winter gradually recedes, Belfast's aptly named Brilliant Corners illuminates jazz--and jazz-adjacent music--in many of its myriad forms. Inevitably, some of the more outré ...

Corey Fonville R&B Organ Trio at The Annex in Norfolk, VA

Read "Corey Fonville R&B Organ Trio at The Annex in Norfolk, VA" reviewed by Mark Robbins

The first time I heard Corey Fonville was in March 2013 at the now defunct Havana Nights Jazz Club in Virginia Beach, Va. He was playing with John Toomey on piano, Jimmy Masters on bass and Joe Locke on vibes. Since then Fonville has been a member of the Nicholas Payton Trio, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah's ...

Kurt Elling: Manifesting the Music

Read "Kurt Elling: Manifesting the Music" reviewed by Leo Sidran

Kurt Elling first appeared on The Third Story podcast in 2016--nearly ten years ago now. In some ways, it feels like a lifetime ago. Back then, he had moved from his native Chicago to New York and was living in Manhattan. The first Trump presidency, the pandemic, and the cascade of upheaval that would follow were ...

I Dischi del 2025 secondo Ludovico Granvassu

Read "I Dischi del 2025 secondo Ludovico Granvassu" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Ludovico Granvassu's Garden Of Jazzy Delights 2025

Read "Ludovico Granvassu's Garden Of Jazzy Delights 2025" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Capturing the breathtaking beauty, range, and diversity of jazz released in 2025 through a list of “10 best albums" feels as challenging, vain--and ultimately disappointing--as trying to photograph the Grand Canyon at sunset by placing a pinhole in front of a rudimentary digital camera's lens. Sure, a picture will be taken. It might even prove you ...

Iron Blossom Festival Midtown Green Richmond, VA September 20-21, 2025 A quick look at Richmond's relatively new Iron Blossom Festival lineup might give some jazz fans pause.
