Marcus Klossek
Berlin-based guitarist and composer Marcus Klossek is one of a growing number of jazz musicians who perform on the Fender Telecaster, the archetype of the electric guitar. It’s an instrument that has shaped generations of distinctive stylists – from Jimmy Bryant and Ed Bickert to Bill Frisell, Mike Stern and Jakob Bro – and Klossek continues this tradition in his own unmistakable way.
An established figure on the Berlin jazz scene, Klossek is best known for his long-running Electric Trio, featuring Carsten Hein on bass and Derek Scherzer on drums. With this compact yet versatile format, he has developed a sound that is direct, melodic and full of narrative drive – proof that sometimes all it takes is guitar, bass and drums to tell compelling musical stories.
For his tenth album as a bandleader, “Blink 6”, released on Double Moon / Challenge Records International, Klossek expanded his trio by adding a three-piece horn section with some of his favorite Berlin-based improvisers: Nikolaus Neuser (trumpet), Ignaz Dinné (tenor saxophone) and Anke Lucks (trombone). The result was a richly layered sextet that explored the balance between composition and improvisation, melody and abstraction.
His new release, “Blink 7”, continues and deepens this concept. The same ensemble returns, now joined by Korean vocalist Chamin, whose contributions in her native language add a fresh emotional dimension and new sonic textures to the group’s sound. Written specifically for these musicians, the album captures the energy of a well-rehearsed band capable of moving effortlessly between structured forms and free, spontaneous interplay.
A graduate of the University of the Arts in Amsterdam, Marcus Klossek has performed at countless European clubs and festivals and is an active educator, leading workshops and ensemble classes worldwide. His expressive and story-driven playing has also made him one of Germany’s most in-demand guitarists, appearing on numerous recordings and projects across the contemporary jazz scene.
