Andy Nechaevsky
Andy Nechaevsky is a Ukrainian composer, multi-instrumentalist, and luthier from Lviv whose music transcends the boundaries between avant-folk, impressionism, and modern creative jazz. As a master-luthier who handcrafts his own resonator kalimbas, Nechaevsky creates a sonic universe that is both technologically innovative and profoundly human. His compositions are defined by hypnotic textures, structured improvisation, and a deep emotional resonance that critics have described as "prayer-like yet claustrophobic."
Nechaevsky’s narrative is deeply rooted in themes of displacement and resilience. After losing his home in annexed Crimea, music became his primary medium for processing the "crossroads of history." This personal journey informs his artistic exploration of the "perpetual outsider" - a concept inspired by the histories of Anusim Marranos and Mozarabs.
Reflecting his own Ukrainian and Jewish heritage, his work explores the hidden inner identities preserved while navigating a shifting world. This is most evident in his sophisticated harmonic language, where he utilizes 9-tone Moorish Phrygian scales alongside the Hutsul mode (also known as the Jewish Mi Sheberach) - a deliberate sonic convergence of the musical traditions that define his lineage.
Building on the foundations of his previous works — including the spiritual reflections of "silent night, almost no bombs" (2024), the Mediterranean textures of "Del Sur" (2025), and the long-form storytelling of the LP "Rain in Spain" (Protomaterial Records, 2025) — his latest cycle, "Secret Life of Button Boxes: Red Box" (Right Brain Records, 2026), marks a new peak in his acoustic exploration. In this release, Nechaevsky utilizes a diverse palette of multiple custom-built resonator kalimbas, pan flutes, bronze bells, and prepared cello.

The project began years ago with a single composition rooted ...
