Quinsin Nachoff

Quinsin Nachoff is a composer and saxophonist who writes for ensembles of varying scale, often shaping the music around the specific performers who will play it. He is equally engaged in composition and improvisation, and frequently performs in the music he leads. Based in Brooklyn and originally from Toronto, his recent work includes long-term collaborations with scientists and filmmakers, alongside concert and chamber projects.

Among Nachoff’s projects is the JUNO-nominated group Flux, featuring alto saxophonist David Binney, pianist Matt Mitchell, and drummers Kenny Wollesen and Nate Wood. His double album Path of Totality (Whirlwind Recordings, 2019) received a 4.5-star review in DownBeat. He has written concert works for classical ensembles, including Winding Tessellations, a saxophone concerto commissioned by Turning Point Ensemble. His album Pivotal Arc (Whirlwind Recordings, 2020) comprises a violin concerto written for Grammy-winning violinist Nathalie Bonin, a string quartet for Montréal’s Molinari String Quartet, and a large ensemble piece.

Stars and Constellations (Adhyâropa Records, 2023) pairs the Bergamot Quartet and The Rhythm Method string quartets with a jazz trio featuring bassist Mark Helias and drummer Dan Weiss. JazzTrail described the album as “finding an exceptional connection between improvisation and notated music, Nachoff continues to forge a path of his own, moving in a revelatory line of action that separates him from other creatives.”

Patterns from Nature, released by Whirlwind Recordings in 2026, brings together music, physics, and film through a multi-year collaboration with physicist Stephen Morris and filmmakers Tina de Groot, Lee Hutzulak, Gita Blak, and Udo Prinsen. Scored for chamber orchestra with featured soloists, it premiered in New York at Hunter College and in Toronto at the Isabel Bader Theatre in 2023. The work features pianist Matt Mitchell, percussionist Satoshi Takeishi, the Molinari String Quartet, clarinetist François Houle, bassist Carlo De Rosa, trombonist Ryan Keberle, and Nachoff as featured voices across its four movements. In its review of the album, Step Tempest described Nachoff as “a thoughtful writer, an adventurous arranger, and a powerful soloist.”

In addition to his own projects, Nachoff performs regularly in New York’s creative music scene, including appearances with ensembles led by Darcy James Argue, Elio Villafranca, and Miggy Miyajima, among others.

His music is shaped by long-form thinking and close collaboration with performers, with each piece defining its own balance between architecture and freedom.

Hyeseon Hong Jazz Orchestra: Things Will Pass

Read "Things Will Pass" reviewed by Jack Bowers

There are a handful of things you should know about Hyeseon Hong (pronounced hay-sun hong), as each of them impacts the scope and purpose of the music on Things Will Pass. First, she is well-versed in the shaping and subtleties of contemporary big-band jazz; second, she was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea; third, she formed her own big band after relocating from Korea to New York City more than a decade ago; fourth, and perhaps most important, she ...

Quinsin Nachoff: Stars and Constellations

Read "Stars and Constellations" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Quinsin Nachoff è personaggio atipico nell'attuale panorama musicale.

Erica Seguine: The New Day Bends Light

Read "The New Day Bends Light" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Erica Seguine/Shon Baker Orchestra: The New Day Bends Light

Read "The New Day Bends Light" reviewed by Jack Bowers

The New Day Bends Light, the debut recording by the twelve-year-old Erica Seguine/Shon Baker Orchestra, is interesting on a number of levels, not the least of which is emotional. The leaders and their twenty-one piece ensemble are clearly committed to the music and do their best to breathe life into each of the album's seven numbers, three of which were written by Seguine, three by Baker and the other ("Ose Shalom") by Nurit Hirsh. Aside from that, there is the ...

Mike Fahie Jazz Orchestra: Urban(e)

Read "Urban(e)" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

There's a rocky history surrounding jazz-classical hybrids. But, in truth, that has little to do with any potential incompatibility. Instead, it's usually misguided maneuvering and/or an excessive show of dominant traits from one side or the other that mars said unions. When done right a wedding of those worlds can truly birth brilliance. Just listen to Urban(e) for proof. Noted trombonist, composer, arranger and educator Mike Fahie's unabashed love for classical music and jazz is clear and ...

Composer Quinsin Nachoff Jazzed up for New York Trip

Composer Quinsin Nachoff Jazzed up for New York Trip

Source: All About Jazz

The coming year promises to be a very good one for local saxophonist and composer Quinsin Nachoff. The musician was recently awarded a $35,000 Ontario Arts Council Chalmers grant to spend a year immersed in New York's bustling jazz community. That news would be a boon for any performer, but it is particularly welcome for Nachoff, who has spent the past few years touring and teaching at Humber College and the University of Toronto. “One of the reasons for the ...

For Flux, Path of Totality: 4.5 stars. "Path of Totality is a stunning, deep dive of an album, the sort of music in which one could spend hours submersed." – J.D. Considine, DownBeat, February 2019 4.5 stars. "an imaginative and ground breaking suite of compositions" – Roger Farbey, AllAboutJazz, January 2019 For Flux (self-titled debut): ★★★★ "...an intensity and modernity, a brashness and in-your-face confidence of delivery." —Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz "Marked by an impenetrable unity, 'Flux' overflows with great resourcefulness, becoming a distinct echo of modernity and inspiration." —Critic Pick, JazzTrail ★★★★ "The quartet's self-command is engaged in a battle with each individual player's sense of freedom, making for that agitation that marks all great music." —Mark Corroto All About Jazz ★★★★ "...the quartet projects a cunning musical personality as large and small surprises trickle through the seams on a recurring basis...", —Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz
