Miguel Moreira

Miguel Moreira, guitarist and composer, is one of the most outstanding musicians in the jazz community in Portugal, recognized for his creative timbre approach to the guitar.

In 2010 he formed his sextet that recorded "Câmbio" in 2012, his first album as a leader and composer that had its premiere at Casa da Música as part of the New Values of Jazz Cycle.

He was a resident artist at the Guimarães Jazz Festival 2019 where he premiered and recorded his most recent record "The Darkness of The Unknown" critically acclaimed as one of the best of the year 2020.

In 2016 he premieres "Receptivity" at the Miso Music festival, a piece written for percussionist João Dias for vibraphone, prepared guitar and electronics.

In 2019 he was invited by the Espinho Jazz Orchestra as a composer, arranger and soloist for an artistic partnership with vibraphonist Eduardo Cardinho that culminated in what will be the Orchestra's first album "Dualcore" recorded at the end of 2022 and released in December 2024.

In 2021 he collaborated as a performer and composer with Drumming G.P. com the piece "Voltaic Drumming" for electric guitar and 3 percussionists premiering at the D.M.E. Festival.

In 2022, "Without Warnings" premieres, a solo concert of electric guitar and prepared guitar, curated by the Ensemble Lucilin in the context of the European Capital of Culture in Luxembourg, for the "33,7" Marathon-Festival.

In addition to his projects, over the last decade he has played and recorded with some of the most illustrious musicians in the Jazz scene such as Mário Santos (Nuvem), José Pedro Coelho Quintet (Clepsidra), Carlos Azevedo Quartet, Orquestra de Jazz de Espinho (O.J.E.) with Seamus Blake, Joshua Redman, Richard Bona, Django Bates, Michael Formanek, Filipa Santos (Mandragora), (Salgueirinha), Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra, João Mortágua (Janela, Dentro da Janela), Chris Cheek (with M.A.P.), Sérgio Carolino among others.

He has played in world premieres of composers such as Wolfgang Mitterer with Remix Ensemble (C.D.M), Igor C Silva with Ensemble Lucilin (Philharmonie Luxembourg), Matthew Shlomowitz with Miquel Bernat (Théâtre National de Chaillot), David del Puerto with Drumming G.P. (T.N.S.J.) João Pedro Oliveira and Jaime Reis with Drumming G.P. (D.M.E).

Miguel began his musical guitar studies at the Porto jazz school at the age of eleven, where he later became a teacher during the period of his degree in jazz guitar. He studied classical percussion at the Professional School of Music of Espinho and at E.S.M.A.E. jazz guitar dedree with Nuno Ferreira and Afonso Pais. He currently teaches Jazz Guitar at the Professional School of Music of Espinho.
