A product of Washington DC’s vibrant Hard Bop tradition, Matt’s trio was featured weekly at the historic Bohemian Caverns Club where Jazz legends like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Charlie Parker once performed. Matt has appeared at the DC Jazz Festival, Boston Arts Festival, China's West Meets East Festival, and the JazzKif and Ca Swing a Kin festivals in Africa. Other venues he's performed at include The Piano Man Jazz Club in New Delhi, No Black Tie in Kuala Lumpur, Jazz@Southbridge in Singapore, and the Blue Note bar in Guangzhou China.

The highlight of Matt’s development as a musician was the opportunity to perform regularly for over a year with legendary bassist Butch Warren, whose playing helped define the sound of classic Blue Note recordings of the 1960s. Working closely with Warren gave Matt a direct connection to and the mentorship of a musician who had shared the stage and studio with Jazz giants like Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk. Playing weekly with Warren taught Matt the importance of swing, groove, and emotional honesty over empty virtuosity — lessons rooted in the soulful, blues-based language of classic Jazz. Matt often credits Warren with deepening his understanding of accompaniment, phrasing, and the art of connecting with an audience, no matter the size of the room. Those influences remain central to Matt’s performances today.
