Steve Wilson: Enduring Sonance

Read "Enduring Sonance" reviewed by Andrew Schinder

Virginia-born, jny: New York-based alto saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Steve Wilson has created a sonic palette overflowing with delightfulness with Enduring Sonance, Wilson's debut album. Wilson's trademark dulcet tones fill the record, which eschews any hint of difficulty or impenetrability in favor of pure pleasure and musical expertise. Enduring Sonance is calculatedly straight-ahead, an exercise in accessibility without sacrificing sophistication. Wilson is supported by a tight, powerhouse backing band. The brilliant pianist Renee Rosnes, who has a longstanding relationship with Wilson, ...

Bill Ware and the Club Bird All Stars: Martian Sunset

Read "Martian Sunset" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Maria Schneider Orchestra: American Crow

Read "American Crow" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Maria Schneider has a thing for birds. Credible sources have reported sightings of the jazz composer frequenting Central Park wearing a floppy hat, a pair of binoculars hanging from her neck. Her 20-plus minute “Cerulean Skies," from her album (one of her masterpieces) Sky Blue (ArtistShare, 2007) speaks to her love for birds; her fascination with their migratory nature and their arduous flights, which span continents and beyond. The composition “Bluebird," from the “Our Natural World"' half of her 2-disc ...

Art Baden: How Much of It Is Real

Read "How Much of It Is Real" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Continuing its well-established mission of documenting some of the noteworthy Russian musicians in today's jazz, the Rainy Days label offers another up-and-comer, tenor saxophonist Art Baden. Joined by three seasoned veterans, Baden provides both fire and sensitivity on his debut disc, How Much of It Is Real--and it is a promising effort all-around. Bassist Jay Anderson, vibraphonist Joe Locke and drummer Jeff Tain Watts will need no introduction to serious followers of mainstream jazz, and they give Baden ...

Brian Landrus: Plays Ellington & Strayhorn

Read "Plays Ellington & Strayhorn" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Brian Landrus: Plays Ellington & Strayhorn

Read "Plays Ellington & Strayhorn" reviewed by Jack Bowers

When gathering material for a new recording, one time-honored rule of thumb is that it is hard to stray too far off course when revisiting the musical handiwork of renowned composer Duke Ellington and/or the Duke's virtuosic alter ego, Billy Strayhorn--even if one chooses to lead with an Ellington theme as relatively unknown as “Agra" from 1967's Far East Suite, which baritone saxophonist Brian Landrus does on Plays Ellington & Strayhorn, a graceful and stylish quartet date that also encompasses ...

Bann (Seamus Blake/Jay Anderson/Oz Noy/Adam Nussbaum) - As You Like (2011)

Source: Something Else!

By S. Victor Aaron BANN is a jazz supergroup of sorts, consisting of saxophonist Seamus Blake, bassist Jay Anderson, guitarist Oz Noy and drummer Adam Nussbaum. We know how supergroups can be hit-or-miss affairs; either egos clash and the different voices don't click together, or they come together naturally to create something that can be very special. BANN didn't just come together for a one-off project on some whim; the group has toured together at festivals and jazz clubs across ...

"Anderson's lyrical bass solos stood out throughout the concert in their passion and melodic sense"

Chris Lim - Business Times (Signapore)

Leonard Feather-LA Times

“Anderson’s bass frolics, romps, bounces and strides with impeccable precision....”

John Scarborough - Houston Chronicle

"Anderson and Davis, superb musicians who suggested the capacity to dazzle with virtuosity had they so chosen, each took a more selfless approach. The bassist turned in excellent solos, with just enough technique to spice his warm, melodic conception and never played two notes when one would suffice.”
