John Beasley

Shape-shifter bridging musical & visual media - 2x Grammy-winner with 14 nominations & an Emmy nomination

About Me

Beasley, the one-time keyboardist for Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, reflects a variety of generational influences, incorporating the emphatic chordal clusters of Herbie Hancock, the rhythmic quirkiness of Monk and the lush intelligence of Art Tatum into a highly refined personal voice. - Los Angeles Times

Pianist, composer, and arranger John Beasley has built a wide-ranging career spanning jazz, orchestral music, and film. Emerging in his 20s with Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard, he has since collaborated with artists including Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride, Chaka Khan, Chucho Valdés, A.R. Rahman, and Steely Dan.

His recordings include the GRAMMY®-winning MONK’estra trilogy, along with Bird Lives, Returning to Forever, El Trio, and Positootly!, reflecting his work as a bandleader, arranger, and producer across large ensemble and small-group settings.

Beasley serves as Music Director of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, leading the globally broadcast International Jazz Day concerts in cities such as Istanbul, Havana, Osaka, and Tangier. His work as musical director for Jazz at the White House received an Emmy nomination.

In 2026, Beasley will release two albums: Invisible Piano with the SWR Big Band, a commissioned program of original works, and Unlimited Miles: Live from Blue Note Tokyo, documenting a powerhouse sextet reinterpreting the music of Miles across four decades through their own distinct voices.

In addition to touring and leading his own ensembles, Beasley continues his work in film music, collaborating with composer Thomas Newman on major motion pictures including Skyfall and Spectre.
