About Me

Detroit-based trumpeter, composer, and arranger, Mr. Jimmy Smith, is a highly esteemed musician renowned throughout the Midwest. Mr. Smith holds a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance from the esteemed Aaron Copland School of Music and is an alumnus of both The Berklee College of Music and Wayne State University. In his capacity as a music educator, he has served with distinction as an artist in residence within New York City's public schools and holds certification as a music teacher in the state of Michigan. Presently, he fulfills the role of Director of Bands at Avondale Middle School.

Mr. Smith has released three acclaimed albums as a co-leader with The Hughes/Smith Quintet. His most recent musical endeavor, a fourth album with the Yao/Smith/Hughes Sextet, was recently made available through Shifting Paradigm Records. This album has been described by Midwest Record as “hot stuff throughout that never quits,” underscoring its dynamic and engaging nature.

As a founding member of The Woodward Horns, Mr. Smith maintains an active career as a freelance musician. His collaborations span a wide array of artists and ensembles, including performances with The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the legendary Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, and numerous others.
