Album Description
The heart of “Vocation” beats with the expressive piano work of Julian, the soaring alto saxophone of Lenard Simpson, deeply felt vocals from soprano Tramaine Parker, resonant bass lines by Micah Collier, and the inventive rhythms of James Russell Sims on drums. Throughout the record, the group crafts a journey that moves from meditative introspection to spirited crescendos, each piece unfolding in vivid dialogue between instruments and voice.
This debut full-length release attends to the relationships most precious in Julian’s life with hopes of illuminating yours. The project is grounded in Julian’s deep hope that God will speak to the listeners about the roles – the vocations – we are called to steward in this life, be they roles as laborers in work, in the home, in our racialized communities, or in our countries. Reid’s compositional approach presents not just music, but a living conversation—one that rewards close attention to the subtle shifts of tonality and emotion.
