Album Description
Philly Standards is pianist Sungtaek Choo’s debut album, recorded with two Philadelphia musicians, bassist Mike Boone and drummer Anwar Marshall. The project grew out of playing together at Smalls Jazz Club, where Sungtaek was struck by their sound and the way they shaped time.
Working with Boone and Marshall brought back the Philadelphia records he had listened to for years, especially the music of McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane. That influence runs through the album, not as something deliberately copied, but as something that came naturally through the music.
The album includes two McCoy Tyner compositions, “Passion Dance” and “Blues on the Corner,” along with the standard “Just in Time” by Jule Styne and Kenny Kirkland’s “Chance”. Rather than relying on fixed arrangements, the trio let each piece develop through listening and interaction.
As his debut album, Philly Standards reflects Sungtaek’s growth in New York through close musical contact with players rooted in the Philadelphia tradition.
