Album Description
Homewards, the debut album of the Batuhan Aydın Folk Quartet, elaborates a distinctive contemporary Turkish jazz style through eight folk melodies drawn from the Anatolian folk music tradition.
The Batuhan Aydın Folk Quartet—featuring Batuhan Aydın on kaval, Nikolaus Grill on piano, Kağan Yıldız on double bass, and Ediz Hafızoğlu on drums—is joined for the album by a distinguished lineup of internationally renowned guest artists. Armenian-American composer and oud virtuoso Ara Dinkjian, one of the pioneers of instrumental world jazz, brings additional emotional nuance to the album through soulful oud improvisations. Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, a leading figure in nu-jazz, adds an ambient texture to the album’s soundscape. Grammy Award-winning fretless guitar virtuoso Cenk Erdoğan’s unique musical language resonates naturally and powerfully within the quartet’s microtonal world.
Beyond its rich instrumental and improvisational traditions, Anatolian folk music encompasses an extensive spoken and literary heritage developed over thousands of years through practices such as the Âşık tradition. In the present project, Batuhan Aydın reimagines this heritage in a contemporary context, exploring new expressive dimensions by joining forces with Jülide Özçelik, one of the most distinctive voices in Turkish jazz. Her rich and captivating voice meets Aydın’s contemporary improvisational language, while the quartet’s microtonal harmonic concepts transform this encounter into a captivating listening experience.
Mixing was done in Istanbul by Berk Kula, one of Türkiye’s leading sound engineers. Mastering was done at CS Mastering Studios in Vienna by Austrian engineer Christoph Stickel, known for his work with artists such as Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, and Keith Jarrett. The album artwork was created exclusively for this release by Beyza Boynudelik, a key figure in contemporary Turkish art.
In addition to its CD release, Homewards has been issued as a special 500-copy vinyl (LP) edition. The first 50 copies form the Artist’s Edition (AE), produced as Artist Proof (AP) pressings. Each AE copy is individually hand-numbered and signed by Batuhan Aydın and Jülide Özçelik, offered exclusively through the artists’ official online channels, including Bandcamp. The remaining 450 copies make up the Limited Edition (LE), digitally numbered, and are available both through the artists’ official online channels and in selected record stores.
