Album Description
Debo Ray’s highly acclaimed self-titled album continues to garner rave reviews and streams (over 360K on Spotify). But Debo’s restless creativity is on full display in her follow up EP Echoes and Embers, a highly personal musical trip that refuses to play by the rules. Bringing together vibrant grooves with her authentic, relentlessly honest voice, this record is bursting with personality and daring musical choices.
Like her album, Echoes and Embers is co-written with veteran songwriter Jerry Velona and produced by Grammy-winning engineer Prince Charles Alexander (Usher, Mary J. Blige, The Notorious B.I.G.), whose skilled production brings both polish and punch to Debo's vocals and inventive musical arrangements.
The four tracks on the EP dig deep into Debo’s previously unacknowledged mental health struggles. From the depths in the languid, hip-hop influenced Going Down to the triumphant, dance-infused anthemic power of I’m Fire Now, Debo’s genre-bending versatility combines with her other-wordly vocal ability to tell a story that resonates deeply both lyrically and musically. In between, the listener finds the defiant R&B groove of Real Good Girl where Debo speaks to how she was “put in a box” for so many years and the jazz-inflected, neo-soui bounce of Flicker where things start coming together on her journey to overcome.
What makes Debo stand out the most is that she writes from her own life experiences. Her voice moves effortlessly between intimate whispers and show-stopping belts, bringing listeners closer into her world.
Beyond the studio, Debo is a seasoned performer who with an international touring resume that includes appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals, and the Hollywood Bowl. She is a longtime collaborator with NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington and a core member of Carrington’s GRAMMY-nominated ensemble Social Science. She has also performed and recorded with Esperanza Spalding, Antonio Sanchez, Bobby McFerrin, and the Screaming Headless Torsos.
Ray invites audiences into her world where vulnerability meets personal power, where genres fuse and where music becomes a vessel for joy, healing, and self-discovery.
