By Water was born out of a time of growth and self acceptance in Miles Mindlin’s life. The music is based around the concept of finding softness and tenderness in hard times and places. It grew from a moment last summer in Bennett Park, near his Manhattan apartment, where he a found a need to create music which was a counterweight to the brutal intensity ever-present in NYC. “I wanted to write something that would tilt the scales a little, bring something of inner peace to the listener”.
By Water stems from the idea that we all ‘live and die by water”. It is loosely inspired by W R Hearst’s poem ‘Song of the river’ and the thought that all humanity is united by basic requirements - if we just look beyond the differences which are viscerally emphasised in current times.
The music is deeply rooted in Mindlin’s ongoing collaboration with saxophone master Dayna Stephens, who was a significant figure in his growth while studying at Manhattan School of Music and Mindlin wrote these compositions with Stephens’ sound vividly in mind. The music was then refined and built into a coherent whole at Mindlin’s fortnightly residency at ‘Ornithology Jazz club’ in NYC where he plays with the exceptional rhythm section of Jonas Esser, Simón Willson and occasional guests. This group has built a great sense of relatability, unity and drama which is perfectly captured on this fine set of tunes, all written by Mindlin.
