Kemuel Roig, a technically superior pianist originally from Cuba, clearly enjoys bringing out the beauty of songs while improvising fresh ideas that retain the essence of the rich melodies.
On his solo piano album Both Sides Now, Roig performs tunes by the likes of Paul McCartney, Jimmy Rowles, Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell, Billie Holiday, Rodgers & Hart, and Michel Legrand plus several gems from Latin and South America.
Sounding as if he were thinking aloud at the piano and often playing the melodies out of tempo while making each note ring, Kemuel Roig digs into the themes while making every song his own. He begins the set with a charming waltz version of McCartney’s “Junk,” performs two versions of Jimmy Rowles’ stirring “The Peacocks,” and uplifts such numbers as Felix Cavaliere’s sweet “How Can I Be Sure,” “Besame Mucho” (which gradually builds up in its passion), a very slow and tender rendition of “Both Sides Now,” a very melancholy “Don’t Explain,” and an emotional “My Romance.”
Kemuel Roig was born in Cuba, began playing piano when he was four, and at eight was studying classical piano and percussion at the National Vocational Art School. He was in high school in 2002 when his family moved to Miami. A working musician at 15, Roig began to discover jazz the following year. He earned a Master’s degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and gained important experience (along with recognition as a brilliant pianist) during his periods working and touring with trumpeter Arturo Sandoval (2010–18) and guitarist Al DiMeola (2018–20). He has also worked with such notables as Brian Lynch, Chris Potter, Randy Brecker, and Giovanni Hidalgo. As a leader, the pianist has recorded such albums as Genesis, Take The A Train, Acoustic Sessions,
Let There Be Joy, Singles, Gracias, 3Discovery, and Dos Almas.
