Musician

Simon Hanes

Simon Hanes is a California born, Brooklyn-based composer, performer and arranger. His work revolves around bridging his main influences; soundtrack music from 1960s/70s Italian films, contemporary classical music, and non-idiomatic improvisation.

Hanes composes for, conducts, and performs extensively with his Italian soundtrack-pop large ensemble Tredici Bacci, which has collaborated with such musicians as Elysian Fields, Ryan Power, Ruth Garbus, JG Thirlwell, Charlie Looker, Ed Askew, Vincenzo Vasi, and underground music legend Gary Wilson. Other projects include extreme noise-thrash trio Trigger, which has performed extensively in the US and Europe as part of composer John Zorn’s bagatelles project; GNR8RZ, a noise/improv quartet with Anthony Coleman, Grant Calvin Weston and Aliya Ultan; and the infamous Brooklyn quartet Shimmer with Anina Ivry-Block, Nina Ryser, and Paco Cathcart. His debut solo album is set to be released in 2023.

Simon Hanes: Gargantua

Read "Gargantua" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Two quotes come to mind in the wake of Simon Hanes' Gargantua. The first is from Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction: “Camera got them images / Camera got them all / Nothing's shocking... “ The second, often attributed to William S. Burroughs: “Nothing is true, everything is permitted." Taken together, they suggest a world where boundaries ...

Simon Hanes: Gargantua

Read "Gargantua" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Read "I Dischi del 2025 secondo Ludovico Granvassu" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Ludovico Granvassu's Garden Of Jazzy Delights 2025

Read "Ludovico Granvassu's Garden Of Jazzy Delights 2025" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Capturing the breathtaking beauty, range, and diversity of jazz released in 2025 through a list of “10 best albums" feels as challenging, vain--and ultimately disappointing--as trying to photograph the Grand Canyon at sunset by placing a pinhole in front of a rudimentary digital camera's lens. Sure, a picture will be taken. It might even prove you ...
