PAON

Active since:

PAON (peacock) is an avant-garde jazz band composed of multi genre singer-songwriter Pernelle and virtuoso music producer Lemm.
The project arose from a creative symbiosis between the two artists, whose musical collaboration was sparked by a shared fascination with interdimensional expression.
The story explores the idea that the imagination transcends physical reality, positing that celestial bodies are dreams personified on a cosmic scale.

Our music finds its authenticity from experimentation and genre fusion, within a science-fiction aesthetic. Blending sophisticated groovy sounds and elements of jazz, rock, ambient or rap into a cinematic storm fuelled by a mystical narrative, PAON is a very unique journey to experience.

King Llama

Right out of the starting gate, it’s apparent that the eagerly awaited new King Llama album, fata implexis (translating to “fate intertwined”), is something special, commanding and category-elastic. The fiery and whip smart instrumental band’s tune “Lora Ky” packs an immediate and visceral punch, within its sophisticated changes, spidery guitar riffs, tricky unison lines and mosaic-like structure, built from material conjured up by guitarist-songwriter Ryan T. Bailey. The song serves as a prelude and on-ramp to the electrifying journey unfolding over six tracks—including the multi-sectional 11-minute epic “Sir Isaac.”

Jeff Haas

Born:

Jeff Haas learned to crawl in the organ loft of Temple Israel in Detroit, listening to his dad play. He grew up surrounded by classical cats rehearsing chamber music with his dad, Karl Haas. At five, he was at the piano under his dad’s watchful eye. In his early teens, Jeff stumbled upon his first live Motown review (Marvin, Martha, The Temps, Four Tops, Supremes and Little Stevie Wonder) at the Michigan State Fair. He had gone rogue. The Motown music scene became Jeff’s playground, hanging out at the Grande Ballroom, Easttown and the back door of Bakers Keyboard Lounge, where Jeff could catch the jazz vibe even though he wasn’t old enough to get in.

Mike Pope

Bassist and composer Mike Pope builds significant musical, personal and spiritual bridges between the past, present and future with his third release, Cold Truth, Warm Heart. The new album shows him to be a visionary composer, arranger and bandleader.

The 2014 offering is the first in a decade and establishes a new threshold of leadership for the virtuoso acoustic and electric bassist who has toured extensively with Chick Corea, David Sanborn, Al DiMeola and Bill Bruford, and more recently, Joe Locke and Eldar Djangirov.

Pope’s 2002 album, The Lay of the Land, delivered contemporary straight ahead jazz with help from stellar players: Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, John Patitucci, Jeff ”Tain” Watts and others. It was warmly received, but tours with other ensembles took up the bulk of his time.
