Maxine Troglauer

For bass trombonist Maxine Troglauer, born in Wiesbaden in 1995, classical, jazz and contemporary music are not distinct genres that need to be separated from one another. Instead, they are organically connected resonance chambers that allow her to confidently engage with the past. She does this on an instrument whose restrained supporting role as the deep voice in the background of orchestras and big bands seemed strictly defined until now: the bass trombone.

Described by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as a "born virtuoso who effortlessly makes the seemingly impossible possible", Troglauer succeeds in transforming her instrument into a cornucopia of unheard-of expressive diversity. Troglauer, who took up the tenor trombone at the age of six before switching to the bass trombone at 13, does not think in clichés. Instead, she recognises opportunities.

The Berlin-based musician's declared goal is to liberate the bass trombone and bring it into the spotlight. Her debut album, Hymn, released in 2025, is impressive testimony to this. Spiegel Kultur says of the recording, which featured US trumpeter Peter Evans, among others: "In fact, the music transcends all attributions, genres, and eras." Deutschlandfunk, on the other hand, states: "With 'Hymn,' Maxine Troglauer presents an astonishingly mature debut, not only technically and conceptually, but artistically above all. She trusts in the complexity of sound, structure, and ensemble, but above all, she trusts herself.'

Troglauer's musical career is characterised by enormous openness. The bass trombonist is one of the very few people to have been a member of Germany's two most important ensembles for young musicians: the Bundesjugendorchester (BJO) and the Bundesjazzorchester (BuJazzO). After studying in Berlin, Hanover and New York, she completed her Master's degree in contemporary music at the Manhattan School of Music in 2021.

Florian Weber: Imaginary Cycle

Read "Imaginary Cycle" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro
