Madre Vaca
Madre Vaca Records is a composer-led collective exploring the intersection of modern improvisation, classical architecture, and literary narrative. Founded by composer and drummer Benjamin Shorstein, the label presents projects that blur the boundaries between written composition and spontaneous invention.
Rooted in jazz but drawing equally from classical forms, experimental music, and storytelling traditions, Madre Vaca releases works in which improvisation functions not as embellishment but as a structural force. Each project approaches music as narrative architecture—often shaped by mythology, literature, or historical themes—while remaining grounded in the immediacy of collective improvisation.
Through recordings, collaborations, and live performances, Madre Vaca cultivates a space where composers and improvisers meet on equal footing, creating music that connects ancient stories with contemporary sound.

On its fourth recording, The Elements, the guitar-led quartet Madre Vaca endeavors to do exactly that, and in roughly forty-one minutes. Each of the album's four selections was written by a member of the group: Fire" by drummer Benjamin Shorstein; Water" by guitarist Jarrett Carter; Earth" by bassist Thomas Milovac; Wind" by pianist Jonah Pierre. So how do they fare? ...

For its third recording, the Florida-based jazz octet Madre Vaca has chosen to perform music by Franz Schuberthold it; stop right there! Music by who? When did ...
