Luca Dell'Anna
Italian pianist and composer Luca Dell’Anna, born in Ferrara on October 10, 1975, has built a distinctive voice in contemporary European jazz through a synthesis of melodic depth, rhythmic sophistication and a strong openness to intercultural dialogue. Raised among jazz, blues, Italian folk music and classical repertoire, he developed early on a musical sensibility in which lyricism, improvisation and structural awareness coexist naturally. His formative studies in classical piano were later deepened through jazz training with Bruno Cesselli and Andrea Beneventano in Rome, experiences that helped shape the broad aesthetic foundation of his work as performer, composer and educator.
After his first professional live experiences at a young age, Dell’Anna became active across multiple musical settings before increasingly focusing on jazz as his central language. From 1999 to 2022 he lived in Milan, where he came into close contact with one of Italy’s most vibrant creative music environments, while also deepening his interest in Afro-Cuban and Latin rhythmic traditions—elements that would become essential to his personal pianistic vocabulary. His music has since evolved into a highly recognizable style that balances contemporary jazz openness with strong melodic identity, rhythmic elasticity and a refined sense of form.
As a leader and co-leader, Dell’Anna has developed a discography that documents a steady artistic evolution: Tan T’Ien – The Fourth Door (2013), Mana (2013), Symbiont (2015/2016), Human See, Human Do (2018), Tactile (2024), and most recently 精進 (Shōjin) (2026). The Fourth Door was selected among the Top 3 Jazz Albums of 2013 by Japan’s The Jazz Critique Magazine, while Symbiont was also recognized among that publication’s best jazz releases. Mana and The Fourth Door were further highlighted through Japanese compilations curated by respected critic Yasukuni Terashima, and Human See, Human Do consolidated Dell’Anna’s reputation as a bandleader with a broader, more orchestral conception of the trio-plus format.
A major strength of Dell’Anna’s artistic profile is the breadth and level of his collaborations. Over the years he has worked with a remarkable range of Italian and international artists, including Adam Rapa, Mike Stern, Paul Wertico, Walter Calloni, Ares Tavolazzi, Steven Bernstein, Makaya McCraven, Bob Franceschini, Dave Douglas, Sheila Jordan, Michael Mondesir, Israel Varela, Jorge Pardo, Mauro Negri, Rich Brown, Marito Marques and Zane Wayne Massey, among many others. These collaborations reflect not only versatility, but also the esteem in which he is held across different jazz communities, from modern mainstream and creative music to cross-genre and intercultural projects.
His long-standing artistic association with trumpeter Adam Rapa has been especially significant, leading to numerous international projects including duo performances, the Adam Rapa Quartet, collaborations with Spanish Brass and Kaustika, and work related to the large-scale production Evolution in Japan. Dell’Anna has also appeared in ambitious collective and special projects such as URkestra, and in The Nineteen Men of Tain, Enrico Pinna’s Allan Holdsworth tribute release featuring artists such as Mike Stern, Jason Rebello, Paul Wertico, Bob Franceschini and Enzo Zirilli. This body of work positions him as both a distinctive leader and a highly valued collaborator in musically demanding contexts.

Luca Dell'Anna: Tactile
by Neil Duggan
Italian pianist and composer Luca Dell'Anna draws from a rich tapestry of musical traditions. His earliest influences came from his grandfather, whose accordion playing was rooted in Italian folk music. At home, his father's diverse record collection introduced him to the works of Nat King Cole, Ray Charles and Johann Sebastian Bach. As Dell'Anna developed his own musical identity, he cultivated a deep-seated appreciation for Cuban and African musical traditions and Gonzalo Rubalcaba in particular. This cultural mix ...
