Garrett Wingfield
Garrett Wingfield is a composer and saxophonist who actively avoids boundaries and borders in his artmaking. His compositions “...demonstrate his unique skills as a writer and instigator of group improvisation...” (Free Jazz Blog) and are “...equally informed by disparate influences — as much Ellington as it is Berio, as much Ornette as it is Zappa…” (Nextbop). His practice undermines the idea that improvisation and highly structured composition are antithetical. Instead, his music brings an intuitive and human element to the otherwise dense and esoteric.
As a saxophonist, Wingfield has performed with musicians all across the spectrum of the jazz world. He was a member of the GRAMMY nominated One O’Clock Lab Band, and has performed alongside Bobby McFerrin, Wycliffe Gordon, and James Morrison. He has also performed with a myriad of improvisors around the United States in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City. Recent performances include a tour with Louis Prima, Jr. and a grant-funded concert at the Moody Center For The Arts in Houston, TX with Vinny Golia and Danny Kamins. Wingfield is active as a leader and sideman in many bands in the Los Angeles and Dallas areas.
