Benjamin Garcia
Ben is a bassist and composer from Mexico City with a solid career in the international jazz scene. He plays both upright and electric bass, has performed and recorded with acclaimed artists such as Antonio Sánchez, Silvana Estrada, Magos Herrera, Melissa Aldana, Michael Mayo, Gilad Hekselman, Jonathan Barber, Dayna Stephens, Mike Moreno, Marius Van Den Brink, Erik Deutch, Miki Yamanaka, and Marco Mezquida among others.
He has performed at festivals and venues across Mexico, including the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, Festival Internacional Cervantino, and Vive Latino, and has toured in Spain, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Colombia, and Costa Rica.
In 2018, he released his first album as a leader, Cíclico, featuring original music for a quintet with Jacob Wick, Diego Franco, Brian Allen, and Gustavo Nandayapa.
In 2023, he received a full scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in jazz performance at the Conservatori Liceu in Barcelona. That same year, his project Jazz en Español was supported by the Ibermúsicas program for further artistic development.
He released "Raíces" on May 2026, a new album together with saxophonist Lucas Martínez, featuring Antonio Sánchez on drums and Marco Mezquida on piano.

If one were to use this recording for a blindfold test, it would be interesting to see what emerged. Pianist (composer?) has an affinity for minor harmonies and repeated figures. Somewhere, deep in the background, there are echoes of Maiden Voyage (Blue Note, 1965). Band is all good players, post-bop, for sure.
