Andrew Moorhead
Andrew Moorhead was born in Houston, Texas. He studied piano and physics at the University of Texas. During his studies and after graduating in 2006 he was an active player in Austin, whose multifaceted music scene provided multiple contexts (jazz, metal, R&B) in which to develop. During this time he was privileged to make music with Carter Arrington, Philippe Vieux, John Fremgen, Matt Muehling, Jon Blondell, Brannen Temple, Dwayne Jackson (aka D-madness), Jason Marsalis, Sam Lipman, Ed Miles, Aaron Easley, Ron Westray, Chris Maresh, and more.
Andrew moved to Boulder, Colorado in 2008 to study mathematics. There, he studied piano with Art Lande and performed widely on the Denver jazz scene with Art Lande, Brad Goode, Grant Gordy, Alwyn Robinson, John Lake, Josh Quinlan, Serafin Sanchez, John Gunther, John Grigsby, Greg Garrison, Greg Tanner Harris, Danny Meyer, Ed Breazeale, and more.
After taking some years off from study to recover from a collection of injuries sustained after a long fall through the open center of a stairwell, Andrew completed a PhD in mathematics. During his recovery period, he rebuilt his approach to the piano in order to compensate for an immobile right wrist and spinal cord damage, which impacted his ability to use the sustain pedal reliably. He has since pursued both music and mathematics, moving between Nashville, Prague, Kansas City, Boulder, and now Dresden in Germany, where he currently lives.
Andrew's music is a blend of various styles and genres. Chief among his influences are Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Allan Holdsworth, Brahms, Bach, Steve Reich, Boards of Canada, and Aphex Twin. His musical ideal is to synthesize his musical influences with structures derived from combinatorics. His second trio recording 'Mirage', featuring Francois Moutin and Ari Hoenig, is a suite of minimalist etudes which explore the interactions between different kinds of cycles.

An Interleaved digital signal is a single woven from multiple threads." This is what Moorhead tells us in his liner notes. The threads of Moorhead's life that come together to create his CD offering are the consequences of that fall, a love of music and his interest in mathematics. This ...
