Alon Stern
Alon Stern is an Israeli bassist, composer, producer and music educator based in Pardes Hanna-Karkur. His artistic work moves between contemporary jazz, Mediterranean influences and cross-genre musical collaborations, combining performance, composition and cultural initiatives.
Stern studied jazz music at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where he specialized in electric bass and double bass, and later earned a master’s degree in music education. Alongside his academic studies he also explored film scoring and composition, an influence that shaped his narrative and cinematic approach to musical writing.
As a composer and bandleader, Stern founded the Alon Stern Octet, a jazz-rock ensemble exploring original compositions that merge jazz improvisation with elements of rock and contemporary world music.
His artistic work also includes orchestral and large-scale productions. In 2021 he served as musical director and conductor for the symphonic collaboration between the metal band Orphaned Land and the Ashdod Symphony Orchestra at the Tel Aviv Culture Hall. Earlier in his career he performed in orchestral and theatrical productions including opera and musical theatre projects.
Stern is also active as a recording artist and performing musician across multiple genres including jazz, rock, classical and world music, appearing on stages in Israel and internationally.
In 2020 he co-founded the modern jazz piano trio ATEMPO together with pianist Itay Abramovitz and drummer Yoav Lachovitzky. Within the trio he serves as bassist, composer and artistic initiator. The ensemble developed a distinctive musical language blending contemporary jazz improvisation with Mediterranean, Balkan, Latin and African influences.
The trio has performed internationally in Europe and the United States at festivals, concert series and notable jazz venues including Blue Note Poznań in Poland and Chris’ Jazz Café in Philadelphia.
Writing in All About Jazz, critic Carl Medsker noted that
“The trio creatively reimagines the style… the results are infectious, with a solid groove.”
German newspaper Rhein-Zeitung described the ensemble’s sound as
“oriental and folkloristic sounds over beautifully odd rhythms that set the audience in motion.”
A review in The Other Side Reviews highlighted the group’s improvisational energy, stating that
“Spontaneous jazz is an absolute blast to listen to and something that A-Tempo Trio are masters at.”
Beyond his performing career, Stern is also active in cultural leadership and music education. He has played a key role in the development of music education initiatives in Israel, including the establishment of the Rahat Conservatory and advisory work for municipal music programs.
