Jayson Tipp

An original combination of funk, soul and jazz called "jazz, groove & attitude"

About Me

Jayson Tipp is a musician and producer whose work inhabits the intersection of sophisticated groove and contemporary melody. Drawing from a rich palette of Jazz-Pop, Funk, and Acid Jazz, Tipp crafts music characterized by high-fidelity precision and an unmistakable “urban night” atmosphere. His sound is anchored by the rhythmic interplay of syncopated basslines and staccato acoustic piano, echoing the polished production standards of the AOR era. Tipp’s arrangements often lean into the mid-tempo pocket of 110–120 BPM, creating a sleek, driving energy designed for both deep listening and nocturnal vibes. Influences & Aesthetic His musical DNA is a tribute to the pioneers of sophisticated groove, reflecting the orchestral soul of Barry White, the harmonic fluidity of Pat Metheny, and the crisp, intellectual funk of Steely Dan. Listeners will also find the keyboard sensibilities of Joe Sample and the vibrant, full-band energy of Incognito woven into his production style. Core Elements: Harmonic Sophistication: Complex voicings bridging pop and jazz theory. Rhythmic Pocket: Tight, interlocking grooves and syncopation. Sonic Clarity: High-fidelity production that highlights every instrumental texture.

My Jazz Story

I was first exposed to jazz - at least as far as my memory serves me - when an elderly neighbor gave me his Jazz At The Philharmonic albums (78s) in the late 70's. It was about the same time as I had joined the jazz band in school. About that same time the high school jazz band came to the junior high to get us all interested. The band included Dave Weckyl (yep... same high school) and they played Weather Report's Birdland... and I was hooked. Our first band director in high school was a gent named Bert Stanley. Bert had played for Stan Kenton and he brought a little jazz influence to everything we played whether it was marching band, concert band, pep band, whatever. Those are some great memories.
