Steve Brecker
Retired music business professional but still playing jazz trumpet gigs!
About Me
I graduated University of Miami in 1976 with a Bachelor of Music Merchandising (music business degree) and played trumpet in several U of M student jazz music ensembles. Pat Metheny was in my music theory class during his brief time at U of M! Spent most of my career working in the music and entertainment business but also actively continued to play trumpet in both classical and jazz settings. I am still an active musician today as a member of a local jazz big band Sentimental Journey, the Charlottesville community band, as well as various smaller jazz and classical groups.

My Jazz Story
I love jazz because of the combination of
spontaneous improvisation and complex
musicality that provides a feeling of
emotional depth. I was first exposed to jazz as
a teenage trumpet player invited to join a
traditional dixieland jazz band.
I met Dizzy Gillespie in the lobby of a jazz club
in Miami and had an interesting chat with him
about playing his music in
cities around the world. The best show I ever
attended was Freddie Hubbard at the Blue
Note in NYC in the 1980's.
The first jazz record I bought was probably
Singin' The Blues with Bix Beiderbecke and
Frankie Trumbauer on the Okeh
label. While my first love is early trad jazz, I
listen to and enjoy all types of swing and
modern "classic" jazz styles including fusion,
funk and much more!
