Michele Maggi

Bass Player / Double Bass Player / Composer

About Me

Double bass player and electric bassist, he seeks his art in the care of acoustic and electric sound, in the performance and composition of distinct musical languages, from folk, blues, to rock roots, exploring with interest contemporary jazz, musique concrète and relationships with the visual arts. Michele Maggi, born in Bari (Italy) in 1977, studied double bass at the Niccolò Piccini Conservatory in Bari with M° Maurizio Quintavalle and earned his first-level (2009) and second-level (2012) in Jazz Music, defending two theses both supervised by his advisor Roberto Ottaviano; the first concerned the role of the double bass in Jazz Music, and the second was a music-political study on the career of American double bassist Charlie Haden. In 2024, he earned a Master’s degree (LM 65) in Performing Arts and Multimedia Production from Roma Tre University under the guidance of Prof. Giacomo Ravesi, defending a thesis on experimental animated cinema that analyzed the work of Leonardo Carrano and the relationship between the image etched on film and sound. Following several studio recordings with various regular ensembles, released by different record labels (Holy Records, Dodicilune Edizioni Musicali, Angapp Records, Four Records, Rox'N Records), he has performed concerts in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland, Serbia, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, at major festivals such as, among others, Time Zones (2023), Onix Jazz Fest (2010) Tuscia In Jazz (2014), JazzIt Fest (2014), Bari in Jazz (2010), Alberobello Jazz Fest (2007) Nisville Jazz Fest (2024), Krakra Jazz Fest (2024).

«My album “Eikon” (Rox’N Records, 2026) you can listen to it online on all digital platforms, is composed only of original pieces inspired by my passion for the visual arts, experimental cinematic arts and the deep art of human inquiry through the “unconscious drawing” doodle sign. In addition the compositions are born from mixtures of acoustic and electric sounds, riffs, deep frequencies weaves, form, improvisation and application of electronic experimentation.

Aside from me on Double Bass “Eikon” was masterfully performed and recorded by extraordinary musicians. Bass clarinetist and electric guitarist Gianni Vancheri with his engaging electronic elements; Alessandro Campobasso with his mastery and sensitivity on the drums; the saxophonist and multi- instrumentalist Angelo Manicone with is impeccable language and sound. The work was recorded by the great sound engineer Tommy Cavalieri (Sorriso Studio, Italy).»
