About Me
David Smith is a sought-after trumpet player based in New York City. Originally hailing from Toronto, Canada, he moved to New York City in 2000 to study with brass guru Laurie Frink. He has since become a mainstay of the New York scene, particularly among modern big bands but also in small group settings. He has released four albums featuring his original compositions for Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records and Fresh Sound New Talent (Redstone, Impetus, Anticipation and Circumstance) and has appeared as a sideman on over sixty recordings. These include Grammy- winning albums Bianca Reimagined from the Dan Pugach Big Band (2025) and Four Questions from Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (2019), Alan Ferber’s Grammy-nominated March Sublime and other albums with Harry Connick, Jr., Glen Hansard, Jon Gordon, Manuel Valera, Tom Jones and many others. He has performed extensively with Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Dan Pugach Nonet and Big Band, Jihye Lee Orchestra, Alan Ferber Nonet and Big Band as well as with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra under the direction of Carla Bley, The Who and Glen Hansard.
