Dave Baron is an internationally renowned jazz bassist residing in New York City.

With a deep sense of swing, creativity, and unwavering musicality, Dave Baron has become one of the most in-
demand bassists of his generation. A mainstay of the NYC jazz scene for 15 years, he has performed alongside
jazz luminaries such as Fred Hersch, Peter Bernstein and Frank Kimbrough. His ability to anchor a rhythm
section with a rock-solid foundation while crafting melodic and innovative bass lines has made him a sought-
after collaborator. A semi-finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Bass Competition and
second-place winner in the International Society of Bassists Scott LaFaro Jazz Competition, he is recognized for
his improvisational skill and keen harmonic awareness, seamlessly bridging tradition and modernity. Whether
providing subtle, expressive support or stepping forward with bold, lyrical statements, Dave’s playing is deeply
rooted in the jazz lineage while pushing the music forward. His artistry has earned high praise from one of

Born and raised in Simsbury, CT, Baron’s musical journey began with the cello, performing in local youth
orchestras before discovering jazz at the age of 12. While working as a paperboy for The Hartford Courant, he
first heard the sounds of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong on the radio, an experience that sparked a
lifelong passion. His formal jazz education began at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, where he
studied under saxophonist Jimmy Greene and was introduced to bassist Reuben Rogers. Determined to refine
his craft, he made regular trips to New York City for lessons, an early indication of his dedication and work
ethic.
He went on to study at the Eastman School of Music, earning a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, before
continuing at the Juilliard School, where he completed a Master of Music in Jazz Performance. While at Juilliard,
he had the privilege of studying under the legendary Ron Carter, whose mentorship had a lasting impact on his
development as a bassist.
His extensive performance career has taken him to renowned venues such as Dizzy’s Club, Smoke Jazz and
Supper Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Mezzrow, Birdland, Jazz Standard, and the Blue Note. Internationally, he has
played at festivals and venues across Spain, Italy, Korea, Russia, Australia, Romania, Israel, and Canada. A
prolific recording artist, Baron has played on 20 albums, showcasing his ability to adapt to a wide range of
musical settings while maintaining his signature sound. Dave has collaborated with some of the world’s
leading jazz musicians including Joe Magnarelli, Eric Reed, Lew Tabackin, Mary Stallings, Jimmy Greene, Steve
Nelson, Russell Malone, Carl Allen, and Bruce Barth.
Beyond performance, Baron is also dedicated to education. As a faculty member at the New Jersey Performing
Arts Center’s Jazz for Teens program, he teaches ensemble, theory, and bass masterclasses, passing on the
knowledge and traditions of jazz to the next generation. His passion for teaching is further reflected in his book,
7 Unique Bass Arrangements (for Unaccompanied Playing), a collection of classical pieces arranged for solo
bass, published through Ron Carter’s publishing company.
