Bonnie J Jensen

Singer, Songwriter and Pianist

About Me

“…Bonnie J Jensen is one of a covey of new female jazz vocalists bringing a fresh perspective to the jazz culture. She joins the likes of America's Norah Jones, Britain's Claire Martin and Sweden's Linda Peterson in bringing a soft, sweet, sultry, soulful synapse to the jazz idiom.” Voodoo Child Magazine, USA

Bonnie J Jensen is a New Zealand–born, Sydney-based jazz singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and producer whose work is celebrated for its emotional intelligence, stylistic range, and fearless musicality. A commanding live performer with “deep, powerfully athletic vocals” and a gift for storytelling, Jensen has long been regarded as one of Australia’s most distinctive jazz voices (The Australian 5/5 Star Review, Oct 2025).

After releasing four critically acclaimed albums in the 2000s, Jensen returned to recording after a 15-year hiatus with her fifth album, RISE—a comeback widely hailed as one of her finest artistic statements. Described as “driven by passion” and possessing “all the sweaty intimacy of a live show,” RISE confirms Jensen as an artist “entirely at ease with her craft, yet eager to stretch her artistry in new directions” (The Australian; SKOPE Magazine).

Jensen is praised for emphasizing narrative, nuance, and rhythmic intelligence. As Rhythms Magazine notes, “Steering clear of the pyrotechnic scatting of traditional jazz singers, her approach is foregrounded in the art of song-craft,” aligning her with artists such as Holly Cole, Diana Krall, and Patricia Barber. Reviewers consistently highlight her ability to balance sultry intimacy with muscular swing, her voice described as smooth yet capable of striking bite and authority when the music demands it.

RISE showcases Jensen’s love of eclectic repertoire, blending jazz standards, modern jazz compositions, and artful re-imaginings of pop and soul classics. From Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea to Sting, James Taylor, Little River Band, The Stylistics, and Nitin Sawhney, Jensen “casts her net widely,” creating a collection that is “steeped in tradition yet unafraid to take detours” (SKOPE Magazine). Her seven-minute rendition of Corea’s “Spain” has been singled out as a centrepiece—“a rollercoaster ride” requiring formidable technique—while her interpretations of Hancock’s “Butterfly” and “Cantaloupe Island” reveal her gift for mood, space, and lyrical subtlety ( Rhythms Magazine, Australia; Jazziz, USA).

An accomplished songwriter and arranger, Jensen contributes original works that sit seamlessly alongside the classics. Her compositions “Hughes’ Blues” and “Spend a Little Time with Me” have been praised for their swing, colour, and emotional directness, underscoring her reputation as “a fine composer and arranger with an ear for colours and a feel for the blues” ( The Arts Fuse, USA).

Central to Jensen’s sound is collaboration. Known for assembling elite ensembles, she is admired for “the calibre of musicians she’s routinely mustered to enrich her records” (Rhythms Magazine). RISE features a handpicked roster of Australia’s finest jazz musicians including Graham Jesse-Flute & Sax, Matt McMahon-Piano, Brett Hirst-Bass, Geoff Hughes-Guitar, Ray Cassar-Trumpet, Nicholas McBride-Drums, moving fluidly between small-group intimacy and full big-band punch. Jensen also produced the album herself, earning praise for her instinctive sense of pacing and sonic framing: “She knows exactly how to frame her instrument… from dining-room intimacy to full big-band punch without losing elegance” (SKOPE Magazine, USA).

Critics agree that RISE is more than a return—it’s a reaffirmation. “In her return to the studio, Jensen hasn’t just picked up where she left off,” writes SKOPE Magazine. “She’s delivered one of her most accomplished statements to date.” Jensen stands as a mature, confident artist whose voice, vision, and interpretive depth continue to resonate—thoughtful, soulful, and unmistakably her own.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because of the sophistication and freedom it offers. I was first exposed to jazz via the music of Carlos Antonio Jobim, the prolific composer of lyrical and poetic Brazilian music. This music had a significant effect on my own songwriting and musical offering, resulting in my aspiration to create heart-opening, uplifting music. During my 'international' performing days, I had the good fortune of meeting many of my musical heroes including Pat Metheny, Dhafer Youssef, Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride, Eddie Gomez, Steve Gadd, Nathan East, Bob James, Harvey Mason and not least, Herbie Hancock. The first real jazz record I bought was Bill Evans "You Must Believe in Spring" and I've learned so much from listening to Shirley Horn, Dianne Reeves and indeed many trumpet players. I am particularly fond of Scandinavian jazz - the quality of their pristine recordings and the space that is inherent in their music. My advice to new listeners is to become very familiar with a few amazing artists' body of work to start with, and truly LISTEN to the different components of their music and their instrumentalists and arrangements. Inform yourself about various instruments and learn the jazz standards - they will be your international stage passport.
