About the Album

An original song (music and lyrics by Angela Verbrugge and Caity Gyorgy) that explores the reticence of the character to settle down when they enjoy their solitude and intellectual pursuits. On one hand, she would like someone to go snorkeling with a partner (safety first!), and him to make her food and coffee. On the other hand, she enjoys peace and quiet, and time, space and budget to pursue her own hobbies without another person to consider.

Angela Verbrugge writes, "I keep notes of expressions I hear and like, or that amuse me. Caity Gyorgy, is a friend and who acted as a trusted advisor on my second album, Love for Connoisseurs (for which Angela was nominated for Jazz Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards). We logged in to Zoom for a songwriting session and I pulled up my brainstorming list and Caity liked that one so we set to work, and the initial draft came together pretty quickly. After we hung up, I added the second chorus, and laboured over smoothing unruly sections. Before I met my husband, I had a boyfriend who had a small bachelor apartment with a great deal on rent. We talked about how it would work if I moved in, and I remember him saying, “but where would we put your clothes and belongings?” He couldn't even identify space for my toothbrush in his bathroom. Upon further discussion, I realized that while he enjoyed the time with me and we had fun dynamics, he hesitated because had his routines, liked his peace and quiet for work, academic and artistic pursuits. Being in a marriage or co-housing situation is what society tells us is the ideal, but it inevitably requires some sacrifice of the self which is why my character in this song hasn’t taken the plunge despite her affection for her partner.
